Kalos’ Legendary Pokémon are available to add to your ranks in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but the process of obtaining them, including Xerneas, will take some time.
While Zygarde gets the majority of the attention in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, there’s still a role for Xerneas and Yveltal to play, and catching them is required to complete your Pokédex and boast 100% completion of the game.
If you’re on the hunt to add Xerneas to your team in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, we’ve got a full breakdown of everything that is required.
How to Catch Xerneas in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Xerneas is only available after you complete the main story in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and serves as part of the post-game content, with a special mission required to access this Pokémon.
After competing in the Infinite Z-A Royale, return to Hotel Z to meet with your team, and L will appear. He will tell you about the two Legendary Pokémon of the Kalos region, who are heading to Lumiose City after the events in the story. This opens ‘The One That Gives’ Mission, which requires you to speak to Mable at the Research Lab.
Once you’ve met with Mable, there are three Alpha Pokémon to take down across three Wild Zones, two of which are well worth catching to help complete your Pokédex. The three Alpha Pokémon and their locations are shown in the table below.
Pokémon | Location | Level |
---|---|---|
Alpha Steelix | Wild Zone 3 | 70 |
Gallade | Wild Zone 5 | 70 |
Pangoro | Wild Zone 9 | 70 |
Xerneas Location in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
After taking out the three Alpha Pokémon, head to Wild Zone 11 and make your way to the mission marker. Annoyingly, the Xerneas spot is on the other side of the river to the fast travel point, so you’ll need to go the long way round and follow the edge of the Wild Zone until you’re on the other side.
Approach the mission marker and interact with it for Xerneas to appear, then approach Xerneas to initiate the battle. As a Fairy-type, it’s recommended you take Pokémon that have Poison or Steel moves for major damage, though you shouldn’t have too many problems if you Mega Evolve any member of your party.
To complete the mission, Xerneas must be caught. If you defeat it and fail with a catch, you’ll have to try again. Fortunately, it should be easy enough with an Ultra Ball, just make sure you’re stocked up beforehand.
