Charmander is available as a gifted Pokémon early in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A story, though you’ll be faced with a tough choice.

After getting to grips with the challenges and adventures that Lumiose City has to offer, and completing Mable’s Research Tasks, you will be invited back to Mable’s office.

Upon arrival, she will inform you that she has been entrusted to take care of three Pokémon; Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle. She’s seeking talented trainers to look after one of the Kanto starters, handing you your second major starter choice after choosing between Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig at the start of the game.

You can only select one of the trio, and it’s worth remembering that all gifted Pokémon in Legends: Z-A are Shiny Locked. However, you can catch more Charmander later in the game if you’re hunting for a Shiny, or if you opted for Bulbasaur or Squirtle.

Where to Catch Charmander in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Charmander can be caught in Wild Zone 20 in Lumiose City, which becomes available deep into your progression in Legends: Z-A.

Wild Zone 20 only unlocks once you have completed Main Mission 38: The Future of Lumiose City. This comes right at the end of the main story in Legends: Z-A and is, in fact, one of the bonus missions after completing the main game.

The approach to locking Charmander and the other Kanto starters you opted not to select early on is reminiscent of Legends: Arceus, where the Hisui starters you opted not to pick became available in Space Time Distortions.

Given that it will take a while until you can catch a Charmander if you don’t opt to choose it as a gift, you should think long and hard about the choice you make.
