A new report claims that a new PlayStation 5 digital edition will be released later this month, but with reduced storage capacity.
The report outlines that the console revision CFI-2100 will still retail at the standard 499 euros price point. PlayStation 5 console revisions usually include other minor changes, such as performance and cooling, but the report outlines that they haven’t been able to find any information suggesting these changes (although we suspect there will be some, as they are not typically advertised).
The report comes from dataminer and JSON sniffer billbil-kun of Dealabs, who has an accurate history of scraping yet unannounced information and data from store websites; therefore, we believe the information is legitimate.
It’s said that the new console will release on September 13th, 2025, in Europe.
PlayStation 5 Console Revisions
Over the years, PlayStation has had several console revisions for the PlayStation 5. Initially released in 2020, the standard PlayStation 5 had an in-built disc drive. However, in November 2023, the console’s most significant change arrived with the introduction of a new PlayStation 5, dubbed the ‘PlayStation 5 Slim’ by the community.
This new console design had a detachable disc drive, allowing users to buy the console as a “digital only” version, which can then be upgraded to have a disc drive at a later date. This new console release made production and shipping costs for Sony a lot cheaper, and since then, the console has gone through a couple of unmarketed changes to continue to slimline production costs.
It seems like this new version, CFI-2100, will be no different, with the only notable change being a reduction in the console’s storage capacity from 1TB down to 825GB, all for the same price.
Once the current 1TB hard drives sell out, the move could suggest that PlayStation plans to release another PlayStation 5 console in the future with a higher storage capacity.
