When you create your first character in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, you’ll be sitting there wondering which race to pick. They have advantages and disadvantages aplenty, but which among them can be considered the best race in Oblivion Remastered?
In this guide, I’m breaking down each race with a smattering of pros and cons to help you make an informed decision. Which race should you pick in Oblivion Remastered? Let’s find out in just a matter of seconds.
Who Will You Be?
Many veteran Oblivion players will tell you that the best race in Oblivion Remastered is Breton. This is because they have a natural resistance to magic attacks while also having the ability to cast strong spells. They’re adaptable and start with great base intelligence and willpower, which is why they’ve always been a prize pick in Oblivion.
Here’s the full spread of races in Oblivion Remastered and what they’re best for:
Altmer
Altmer is an elven race that has strong intelligence but lower levels of strength and speed right off the bat. Their Magicka bonus can’t be discredited, but they’re naturally weak to many magic attacks, which is a sticking point for players.
Argonian
Argonian is an interesting race for anyone who wants to remove themselves as far from a ‘humanoid’ role as possible. Argonians look like lizard people, and they have attributes to match. They’re hugely resistant to poison attacks, they can breathe underwater, and they are less prone to diseases.
The trade is that they start the game with less endurance and personality points than other races, which is a turn-off for most players as they’re considered critical abilities.
Bosmer
Bosmer is another elven race, but this one focuses more on agility and marksmanship, which are more traditional elven attributes. With Bosmer characters, you’ll want to lean more towards stealthy roles and ranged attacks, plus potions will be more effective.
Like other elven races, Bosmer suffer from a lack of strength, so they don’t make the best physical fighters.
Dunmer
Dunmer is – surprise, surprise – another elven race in Oblivion Remastered. This race is focused on fast-bladed abilities, being stronger than other elven races in Cyrodiil. They have boosts to base speed, and their homeworld has made them naturally resistant to fire damage.
Imperial
Imperial characters hail from Cyrodiil, the world in Oblivion Remastered. They’re in their home state, which gives them a personality boost that no other race has. They’re typically slower and less agile than other races, though.
As Imperial characters are naturally better on a face-to-face level, they get boosts in bartering and speechcraft, which can pay dividends when interacting with officials and traders in Oblivion Remastered.
Khajiit
Khajiit is the race that’s referred to as ‘feline’ in Oblivion Remastered. These cat-like people are great hand-to-hand fighters and they’re stealthy to boot, but they can lack strength and endurance.
With a Khajiit, you’ll be getting big boosts to acrobatics, and attributes such as light armour, athletics, and blades are all boosted too.
Nord
The Nords are the hardy folks from Skyrim, so they might already be familiar to you in Oblivion Remastered. With a Nord, you’re getting one of the strongest races in the game, and their endurance levels are quite high. They’re also resistant to cold damage, thanks to the snowy world from which they originate.
They suffer when it comes to personality and intelligence levels, though.
Orc
The Orc race is often looked down upon in Oblivion Remastered – and every other Elder Scrolls game. They’re strong, resistant to magic attacks, and have high endurance, but their personality, intelligence, speed, and agility skills suffer massively.
As Orcs are often natural warriors, they have boosts to armour, blocking, and blunt-based skills, plus their hand-to-hand skills are better than average.
Redguard
Redguard characters hail from Hammerfell, and they have great traits and solid attributes that boost their strength and endurance. They’re not the smartest characters, but they’re hardy, and they’re resistant to both disease and poison damage.
Redguard could be the second-best race to pick in Oblivion Remastered, given some of the base boosts in abilities and skills.
