It is a wild day when a game completely unrelated to another video game ends up sponsoring that game. World of Warcraft China (WoW) has recently sponsored two Chinese Dota 2 organizations going into The International 2024. These sponsorships are happening despite Valve’s ban on in-game ads during the massive tournament.
World Of Warcraft Sponsors Two Dota 2 Teams Regardless Of In-Game Ad Ban
It was recently announced that World of Warcraft China was going to sponsor G2xiG and Xtreme Gaming’s Dota 2 team going into The International 2024. This huge esports event is considered the biggest Dota 2 competitive tournament in the world, happening once a year.
Seems pretty cool that a video game completely unrelated to Dota 2 would sponsor them, right? Well, it would seem as if the sponsorship may be for nothing, as Valve has made it incredibly clear that no in-game ads will be allowed during the extent of The International 2024 event.
With this ban on in-game ads, it would seem as if the WoW sponsor holds very little weight going into the Dota 2 event. Will the game pull out from its sponsorships? Or do they have a marketing strategy up their sleeves that no one will expect?
The sponsorship plan was originally to put two popular WoW character’s names on the jerseys of each team.

The partnership with the two Chinese Dota 2 teams was supposed to be a way to help promote the game’s new expansion, but it seems as if Blizzard’s efforts may have been for nothing.
