What is Hazelight Studios’ Next Game? It Takes Two Sequel Explained

It Takes Two put Hazelight Studios on the map, making its next game of paramount importance. A Way Out put the feelers out, and It Takes Two smashed it in every way, but the next project could be the biggest and best yet.

I’ve been on board the Josef Fares express train since the beginning. The creative auteur’s journey began before Hazelight Studios was founded. Fares directed Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for Starbreeze Studios. This begins the co-op gameplay journey the visionary would begin and pursue over the next 10-plus years.

He founded Hazelight Studios where A Way Out became its first major release. It was a big success selling nearly 10 million copies. It Takes Two followed, and it has shipped over 20 million copies and scooped up a plethora of Game of the Year accomplishments. Now, it’s the turn of Hazelight Studios’ next game.

Split Fiction is the next game from Hazelight Studios, due to release in 2025—and it is seen as the spiritual successor to It Takes Two.

Josef Fares began teasing Hazelight’s new project on Oct. 17, 2024, with a message on X. He cryptically posted: “Getting a lot of questions about the next game. Here is a tease. It is a BRAND NEW IP called S**** ******N. Can’t wait to show it soon.”

It was finally revealed as Split Fiction with a debut trailer at The Game Awards 2024 ceremony. Everything we’ve seen about Split Fiction shows Hazelight Studios isn’t budging in its efforts to deliver immersive co-op games.

What is Split Fiction About?

Split Fiction is a co-op-only adventure about two authors—Zoe or Mio—who find themselves physically pulled into the individual worlds they have created.

Mio’s works are mainly science fiction-based, whereas Zoe prefers fantastical tales. You and a friend must work together to guide them through deep and ever-changing worlds and biomes—traversing mini-games, platforming sections, and overcoming perilous foes à la It Takes Two.

Note: This is a separate work from It Takes Two and is a standalone IP/sequel.
