Mat Piscatella, the executive director and video game industry advisor at Cricana, is back with July 2024’s U.S. video game market highlights. According to the stats, video game hardware and content spending was up 10% compared to last year.
Piscatella has revealed that $4.8 billion was spent in July on video game hardware, content, and accessories in the United States. The overall expenditure was up by 10% compared to last year, and the 2024 year-to-date spending is 2% higher than 2023, coming in at $32 billion.
Overall Game Spending For July 2024
In terms of content spending, July saw an overall increase of 10% compared to last year. Console content spending increased by 29%, and mobile content spending grew by 8%. However, spending on PC, cloud, and non-console VR content decreased by 6%.
The top 10 best-selling games in July included EA Sports College Football 25, EA Sports MVP bundle, Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Minecraft, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, Hogwarts Legacy, MLB: The Show 24, EA Sports FC 24 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Moreover, video game hardware spending increased by 12% compared to 2023, reaching $326 million. The spending growth was observed across PlayStation 5 (+25%) and Xbox Series consoles (+48%); however, spending on Nintendo Switch consoles dropped by 44% in July 2024.
PlayStation 5 was the unit and dollar sales leader, with the Xbox Series claiming the second spot. Lastly, July 2024 is also the first month since December 2023 to observe an increase towards year-on-year video game hardware spending.
In other news, Bethesda is seemingly targeting an April 2025 release window for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5.
