Video game hardware sales wrapped up 2024 with an overall decline for the year. That’s according to the latest sales data from Circana.
In the United States, hardware sales fell 29% for the year from $1.55 billion in 2023 to $1.11 billion in 2024.
After a slight increase in year-over-year sales totals in November thanks to the release of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro, December saw numbers dip by 25% year-over-year. While it still brought in $4.85 billion in December, it’s a far drop from the $6.45 billion in December 2023.
Drilling down to specific hardware numbers, it’s easy to see how and why overall video game hardware sales fell as drastically as they did.
With the Nintendo Switch ending its lifecycle, the nearly eight-year-old system saw its December sales numbers fall 38% . The Xbox Series consoles also saw year-over-year sales for December fall by 38%. The PS5 couldn’t keep the momentum of the PS5 Pro’s release as its numbers fell 18% year over year.

When it comes to accessories, year-over-year sales for December were flat though the year figures were 6% higher in 2024 they were for 2023 at $3.17 billion compared to $2.99 billion. The PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory of the year in terms of spending while the DualSense Midnight Black controller was led in terms of overall units sold.
