Video Game Hardware Sales Continued To Fall In September

Video game hardware sales continue to fall in the United States, and not by just a little. Circana released the latest US data on Wednesday, and it shows yet another month of falling sales numbers.

Hardware spending fell from $445 million to $251 million, or 44%, year-over-year. The fall represents the lowest amount spent on hardware sales in September since 2019 where revenue was $242 million.

The drop in sales was felt across the board as sales of the Xbox Series systems fell 54% year-over-year followed by a 45% drop in PlayStation 5 sales. The Nintendo Switch, which is set to be replaced within the next year, saw a 23% year-over-year decline.

In total, year-to-date hardware sales are down 30% compared to last year. It’s worth mentioning, however, that sales have still brought in $2.5 billion in 2024.

Moving on to accessories, there was actually a 1% increase from September 2023. Accessory sales rose to $217 million for the month thanks to the sales of the PlayStation Portal, which remains the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for the year. It’s owned by 3% of PlayStation 5 owners.
