Valve is set to allow its SteamOS to function on rival handheld devices. After recent update notes mentioned support for ROG Ally keys, many wondered if this meant the operating system was going to come to the ASUS ROG Ally and other handhelds like the Lenovo Legion GO.
According to Valve itself, that’s exactly what’s happening.
In a statement given to The Verge, Valve’s Lawrence Yang says the team is working on bringing full support for other devices.
“The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS,” Yang said. “The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS.”
As far as how it would work, that’s unknown as it’s unlikely that any non-Steam Deck handhelds would come with the operating system preinstalled. Still, with future support, it would allow users to easily install SteamOS and know their device will still function properly even with a different layout.
There’s also no timeline as to when full support will be available. According to Yang, via The Verge, it’s not “ready to run out of the box yet.”
