If you’ve come here to find out how to upgrade your equipment in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, we can help! BioWare’s latest game has a practical solution (and one that should be copied) when it comes to upgrading equipment.
In the game, you can upgrade two aspects of the items you equip: rarity and level. Below, you’ll find out how to increase both to keep your character strong throughout the campaign!
How to Improve Equipment in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Rarity
As I said above, you can increase both the levels and the rarity of your equipment. Let’s start with rarity. Dragon Age: The Veilguard follows the basic RPG playbook and the items follow this path:
Common > Uncommon > Rare > Epic > Legendary
To increase the rarity of a piece of equipment, you’ll need to collect it from a chest repeatedly or buy the same item from the merchant. The game uses a “duplication” system and this is the only way to improve rarity at the moment. As the maps are semi-linear, exploration is very pleasant and intuitive.
Also, always check out the merchants, both common and faction, to buy the equipment that makes sense for your build!
The Level
In addition to rarity, equipment also has a level, going up to +10. This process is a little more complex. In the hub, called The Lighthouse in the game, we meet an NPC called the Caretaker. She is the blacksmith responsible for increasing the level of our equipment.
However, the blacksmith has a level that is linked precisely to the level of upgrade she can do. For example, if she’s at level 6, she will only be able to upgrade equipment up to +6.
To increase her level, we’ll need to collect mementoes – collectables that glow green. Many of these collectables are in no-return areas, so they can be lost.
Always explore carefully. To reach level 10 with her, you’ll need to deliver 140 mementos and the game only has 182. Remember to keep the Caretaker levelled up at all times. The reason for this is that the equipment you get goes hand in hand with her level.
For example, if she’s level 7, all the equipment you get will already be +7. This will help you save a lot of resources along your journey!
