Team Spirit has claimed the top spot at the Perfect World Shanghai Major, beating FaZe Clan in a lengthy grand final and securing the $500,000 prize – the lion’s share of the $1.25 million pool.
This victory over FaZe Clan means that Team Spirit’s donk – voted MVP – is now the youngest player to ever win a CS Major at just 17 years of age. The superstar rifler put up an intense fight alongside his teammates, securing the trophy for the first time for Team Spirit.
Emotional Finish
It was a hard loss for FaZe Clan, with the team going against the odds to make it this far at the Shanghai Major. The squad wasn’t the favourite to win, and even defeating G2 in the semi-finals seemed like a gargantuan task.
It was back in April that FaZe Clan last secured a win, taking the trophy at IEM Chengdu – fans backing the squad really thought this would be the one, and then along came Team Spirit.
FaZe Clan’s Karrigan was captured in an emotional state after the loss:
It was a relatively close finish, though. While Team Spirit managed to control the opening round on Nuke, FaZe Clan pulled it back with a dominant run through Ancient. It fell down in Dust II on match point, but for a brief period, it looked as though FaZe Clan was going to offer up a reverse sweep.
By the time Team Spirit had claimed seven points on Dust II, FaZe Clan had just one round win. After the switch, FaZe Clan went on to gain seven rounds almost in immediate succession, but the whole time, Team Spirit needed just one successful go-around to win – and that’s what happened.
Congratulations to Team Spirit and commiserations to FaZe clan – but onto the next one.
