Like any good JRPG with a broad cast of characters, Visions of Mana allows you to swap between playable characters for the ultimate party-based combat system. But it’s not immediately apparent to the player how to switch characters in Visions of Mana. We want to help you get the most out of your party, beat back any foe, and diversify your combat style!
How to Swap Playable Characters in Visions of Mana
You can swap characters in Visions of Mana by tapping Up or Down on the D-Pad of your controller. Your current character—the one you presently control in combat—will always have their player card on the bottom of the party HUD in the left-hand corner of the screen. You can tap Up to switch to the next character in your lineup or Down to swap to the previous character.
We should note that you can’t always swap characters. While it’s more often than not possible during combat or exploration, certain sequences, specifically story quests, do not allow you to switch characters. Here, you’ll take control of Val—the lead character—and you may interact with your party within the world.
When to Switch Characters
You’ll primarily find yourself swapping between party members during combat and exploration out in the overworld. While it’s currently unclear to us (We’re working through the game now!) whether there’s a reason to switch characters during exploration, such as unique paths or interactions, doing so in combat does allow you to press your advantage and use character-specific abilities.

- Val
- Careena
- Palamena

- Julei
Furthermore, during the game’s prologue, you’ll take control of Eoren.
Despite how much fun we’re having with Visions of Mana, it appears the game isn’t selling very well. NetEase is reportedly considering closing Ouka Studios, the studio behind the project!
