When you first start playing through the tutorial portion of The Forever Winter, you’re immediately thrust into the malformed shoes of Old Man. He’s the first scavenger you’ll play in the game, but others are available. Here’s how to switch characters in The Forever Winter!
How to Change Your Character in The Forever Winter
You can change your character in The Forever Winter while hanging around The Innards—not during a raid! While at the hub area, hit ‘ESC’ on your keyboard to access the game’s menu. Here, navigate to the “Character” tab, where you’ll receive a character select screen with six portraits of scavengers. Click on one of them until their name is highlighted with a red box.
You’ll note that your model won’t automatically change despite highlighting your desired character. The swap will occur the next time you load into a raid, so don’t fret just because it didn’t automatically change your characters!

All Characters in The Forever Winter
There are currently five characters available in the game, with a sixth on the way sometime during Early Access. These scavs include:
- Old Man
- Scav Girl
- Mask Man
- Shaman
- Bag Man
- Gunhead
You cannot currently play as Gunhead, though he’s already a fan favorite. He’s the one character that’s been announced and is on the way, but we must wait.
Do Characters Have Unique Skills in The Forever Winter?
Yes! Every character in the game features a unique skill tree that you can level up and unlock perks for by extracting from a raid and completing missions for vendors. Their skills vary, with most having some combat training using the game’s various weapons, including rifles, SMGs, grenade launchers, and light machine guns. Others, such as Scav Girl or Bag Man, have support skills that allow them to carry more or sprint a touch faster than the others, for example.
Have you had a chance to jump into The Forever Winter’s unique world? It’s quite the extraction shooter, with room for polish, but we’re enjoying it all the same. Let us know what you think in the official Insider Gaming community forums!
