Gamescom is here once again and host to some of the biggest games to release in the next couple of years. But away from all the big queues and questionable smells, a squirrel is nested and hidden away in the Indie area. You’ve likely already seen some viral videos of the game, but today, I sat down to play Squirrel With a Gun, a fantastic little Indie game development by three developers over the past couple of years.
The premise? You play as a squirrel hellbent on mayhem and as the name suggests, you have a gun (there’s a verity of different guns in the game from pistols to SMGs to rocket launchers). You’ll also be able to drive a miniature sports car, fly a drone, and use melee weapons, and even a cake.
Squirrel With A Gun Hands-On
During my time playing I went through the tutorial and the pre-open world level to get a small taste of what’s to come on full release. The game instantly felt really good to play, with the use of using the guns recoil to assist with jumping and movement feeling natural to play. Gun recoil has also been used to make for some creative and hilarious enemy takedowns, too, and while I only used a couple of weapons during my hands on, each one left a smile on my face.
Squirrel with a Gun let’s you explore and cause havoc in an open world with platforming puzzle-like levels scattered throughout. The goal? Well to collect as many acorns as you can of course. Acorns and golden acorns are redeemed for more cosmetics, weapons, and more throughout the map which make for taking out agents even more hilarious.
Squirrel With a Gun is yet another Indie Must Buy for me. And priced at just $20, I think you’d be nuts not to give it a go, too. Squirrel With a Gun releases on August 29 on PC, with a Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5 release planned for this fall.
