Sony CFO Says Company Doesn’t Have Enough IP

Sony doesn’t think it has enough original intellectual property (IP).

In an interview with the Financial Times (h/t to PlayStation Lifestyle for spotting it), Sony chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said that the company needs to put more of a focus in creating its own IP moving forward. And that’s not just in a specific sector, but throughout the company.

“Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning,” he said. “We’re lacking the early phase (of IP) and that’s an issue for us.”

Hotoki added in the interview that Sony has been “better at finding a global audience for content that have already become popular in their home market.”

From a gaming standpoint, Sony has a number of original active IPs for PlayStation. Franchises such as God of War, Horizon, Uncharted continue to be successful from Sony first-party developers. The company also has a number of dormant first-party titles like Bloodborne (which Sony funded at FromSoftware), Killzone, SOCOM, Resistance, and more.

  • How about using what you have? Fans want a proper finale to Jak & Daxter make Jak 4, remake he old games, remake the original God Of War games, make a new Twisted Metal that’s like GTA, do something with Siphon Filter, Sly 5, remake Ico and Legend Of Dragoon, there’s a ton of games to remake. They produce a ton of anime and there’s more they can produce but don’t I don’t know what they mean there.

  • Sony needs to dump stuff they can’t survive. The time to build new IP has come and gone they don’t even use what they have properly it’s not being used to it’s full potential. Time for Sony to sell off some things honestly Sony Pictures can go sell it to Fox for Tubi it doesn’t help PlayStation if that’s the thing they want to push. Maybe sell Crunchyroll to AMC Networks or Trump’s company they have money.

  • Well they can’t buy any they wasted their money on Bungie. This feels like an excuse for why they underperform to investors more so. I hope the investors wake up Sony is a dumpster fire not just Playstation but everything they’re a mess. Microsoft at least has other things to rely on like Windows.

  • Sony doesn’t even do anything with its old IP. Honestly they could have bought Crash and Spyro back in 2013-2015 from Activision but didn’t instead years later they waste billions on Bungie a studio that hasn’t made a good game since Halo 3.
