A post on Twitter from Sonic the Hedgehog game designer Morio Kishimoto is sending fans into a bit of a frenzy. In a reply to a fan question on the social media platform, Kishimoto teased that new 2D Sonic games are coming from Sega.
The fan asked if the Sonic team will work with Japanese studio Dimps, the team behind Sonic The Hedgehog 4, again. That’s when Kishimoto clarified that the game was a Sonic game fully made and that more games are coming.
“In addition to 3D Sonic games, Sonic games also have side-scrolling Sonic games, so please look forward to them,” Kishimoto said.
While he didn’t confirm that a new 2D Sonic game was in active development, his reply did heavily suggest that one is coming.
Of course, the last 2D Sonic title was Sonic Mania. Released in 2017, Sonic Mania was widely praised as a game that brought back the feeling of the classic Sonic games while still moving the franchise forward.
The latest Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, has found commercial success since its November release. The game’s sales were so far above expectations that it is allowing for added features to be developed in the game’s sequel. That game is set to receive three DLC packs later this year. All of them will be free, including one that adds new characters and a new story to the game.
Insider Gaming has reached out to Sega’s reps for comment on a possible new 2D Sonic title. Should the company respond, this story will be updated accordingly.
