Sega’s New Trademark Could Be the Secret Game at Xbox Developer Direct

SEGA’s trademarks for “Ecco the Dolphin” and “Ecco” went public today, and players believe this could be the surprise game at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct.

Spotted on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, a post on X by Gematsu revealed that on December 27, 2024, SEGA filed trademarks for “Ecco the Dolphin” and “Ecco” in Japan, and this information was made public today. Players believe that this could be the secret game at Xbox Developer Direct as it matches the description of being an iconic Japanese IP with a lot of history.

A few days ago, Xbox revealed that a Developer Direct is scheduled for January 23, 2025, during which they will reveal more details about South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and a secret game. Right after the announcement, a report claimed that the secret title would be “a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP which has decades of history. ” Players speculate that this IP is none other than Ecco the Dolphin.

Ecco the Dolphin is a video game series created by Ed Annunziata for the Sega Genesis console. In this game, you play the role of a bottlenose dolphin called Ecco, who is searching the vast ocean for his missing pod. The series received several instalments until 2000, including Ecco: The Tides of Time, Ecco Jr., and more. However, the franchise has been dormant since then.

It’ll be interesting to see if SEGA’s new trademark is indeed Xbox’s secret title. However, we will have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure.

In other news, a recent report stated that Sega could be working on a new game subscription service. Also, two Xbox exclusives might be coming to Nintendo Switch 2. What are your thoughts on SEGA’s new trademark? Is it Xbox’s secret title? Let us know in the comments below or on our community forum!

  • There’s gonna be a lot of disappointed people. I grew up with the Genesis as a small kid and anything SEGA I loved, but not everyone else was so understanding. I would say this was a major franchise, I never knew anyone that really talked about or. Today, imagine the possibility of playing a game where it looks like Nathan Drake doing salvage, that was a really pretty look and fun experience to that game, but could be what Ecco looks like, unless they do something arcade-like but, who knows. You can do a lot more with light these days.

Point is, people always saw this as the poor man’s or Sega version of Metroid or in a way SEGAs answer to Metroid, but not the booming mind-blowing announcement Xbots would expect or want. They’ll be shocked and it’ll be interesting to see how it does but, I don’t think it fits the “iconic” status they’re talking about. And SEGAs cozying up to Xbox quite closely, especially odd since Xbox is on the brink of collapse and developing anything for Xbox really isn’t that wise seeing as how once their major titles see PlayStation and Switch shores, whose really going to want an Xbox? Play it on PC or PlayStation, a sketchy road PlayStation is messing with but Nintendos held firm, and thus feel Nintendo has and will continue to hold gamers respect as a result, PlayStation? Could consumers could start losing respect for.

Not a major announcement. Xbox just clamoring for anything

  • That’s a big L but I wouldn’t be surprised jez is known for overhyping and lying then pretending he never did the other xbot leakers do the same. He said he’d leave twitter if musk bought it never did same with all these fakes. If it’s not this my guess is Persona 6 which I still think is a bad choice but better than Ecco. Nintendo Direct would be better for Persona 6.

  • Sega pay From Software to remake Otogi 1 and 2 then finally make 3. Also finally release Shenmue remastered on Switch, Gun Valkyrie on all platforms, Crazy Taxi 3, Jet Set Radio Future, OutRun 2, Yakuza PS2, Skies Of Arcadia, and Virtua Fighter 4
