It has been discovered that both Rainbow Six Siege and Rainbow Six Mobile have been approved for publishing in China and that Tencent will be the company bringing the games to the market. It’s expected that China will have a closed-doors client that’s operated by Tencent and that any players looking to match with users outside of the country will need to use a VPN.
In recent years, China has been ‘importing’ more games. In April, it was confirmed that Activision Blizzard’s games would be returning to China thanks to a new publishing agreement between AB and NetEase.
Rainbow Six, But In China
Several years ago, there were claims that China was causing unnecessary levels of ‘censorship’ in Rainbow Six Siege, with Ubisoft altering or removing several references to death, drugs, and nudity to appease a potential Chinese audience. It has taken almost a decade for Rainbow Six Siege to be approved for the Chinese market – it’s yet to be revealed if any changes will be made to the ‘global’ version of the game to account for this action.
Until now, players in China have been able to ‘workaround’ the restrictions to get hold of a PC copy of the game (with heavy amendments).
More importantly, China will be getting access to Rainbow Six Mobile from the moment in launches, thanks to this proactive approval. It’s expected that Rainbow Six Mobile will be released in Q2 of 2025, but the date keeps shifting. There’s a huge market in China for mobile games, so this could present an exciting new esports angle for the region.
