Sony has just dropped a remarkable piece of news out of the blue, suddenly revealing the PS5 Slim models – both the disc-drive-as-standard and the Digital Edition. It was also revealed that the latter version will launch alongside an optional attachment that Insider Gaming exclusively reported on over a year ago – an attachable disc drive.
It’s Real – And We Reported It a Year Ago
Back in April, Sony patented an external disc drive, but it was over a year ago that Insider Gaming exclusively reported on the PS5 Slim (which it was then assumed to be) getting a ‘detachable disc drive’ – that has come true thirteen months after our report.
It was reported by Sony that the new PS5 Slim models have been reduced in volume by more than 30% but still retain their ‘original power’.
In North America, the PS5 Slim will be made available at select retailers in November, and from PlayStation directly. In the following months, it’ll roll out globally. Here’s the detailed pricing structure for the PS5 Slim:
- U.S.
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 499.99 USD
- PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 USD
- Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 549.99 EUR
- PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 EUR
- U.K.
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 479.99 GBP
- PS5 Digital Edition – 389.99 GBP
- Japan
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 66,980 JPY (includes tax)
- PS5 Digital Edition – 59,980 JPY (includes tax)
If you purchase the Digital Edition of the PS5 Slim, you’ll be able to secure an attachable ‘Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive’ for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.
Here’s how it’ll work:
Finally, Sony revealed that while the PS5 Slim will be bundled with a horizontal stand, there will be an optional vertical stand that will be purchasable for 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY.

Thank you Sony for still giving people the ability to use disc drives. Unlike Microsoft who wants to rid their community of the chance to own their games.
Sony will do the same, for example, less than 10% games in United Kingdom are sold in Physical copies.
Physical copies will die out sooner than you think.
They won’t do it if they sell a disc seperate.
There’s no such thing as physical games. Disc’s now a days just serve as license keys
If i can hold it in my hand its good enough
Those both are digital editions. Only one is with detachable disc drive already in box. And in combo will be sold slightly cheaper than to buy seperately. And old design is getting retired.
Haven’t seen this be reported anywhere – if digital was still $399, physical customers would simply buy digital console with separate hard drive and Sony would lose $20 ($399+$79). This makes the $499 physical the only option for those players, but that said they could have also made digital only $419.
Yeah, and rumours are that next ge eration of consoles will be Digital only from day one.
They are selling just seperate units in general. Disc version is same Digital edition only with disc drive connected. Both consoles are same.
