PlayStation isn’t giving up on live service games any time soon. In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, PlayStation Co-CEO Herman Hulst said that the company still believes in the model despite recent hiccups like Concord.
“The game business is constantly changing due to various factors, including technological advances, new genres and ways of playing,” Hulst said via auto translation. “However, one thing that remains constant is people’s desire for great entertainment experiences, and attention to games continues to grow. However, this has also created competition, and like many companies in the industry, we have had to make changes to our business to solidify a more sustainable operating base.”
Hulst continued by saying PlayStation will “continue to focus on developing live service titles along with the story-driven single-player titles that our players want.”

As far as why a continued effort towards live service games, Hulst pointed to Helldivers 2’s success as a reason. The co-op title from Arrowhead Game Studios showed how a live service game can succeed in the modern era, and it’s something that Sony and PlayStation are paying attention to.
“We are learning a lot as we establish the ability to develop high-quality live service titles within SIE,” he said. “Helldivers 2 attracted many players through continuous content provision, and achieved results that support the potential of live service titles.”

Oh no, here we go with this again.
Well, they should, because nobody wants them. They can’t seem to understand that. It’s like they like throwing money away and then say they have no money for game development and make gamers wait five years for a game when it only used to take 2 years. You see how it works?
People keep telling them NO but they don’t listen, they just keep making them and though they don’t want to make real games anymore, they want to dictate the industry to make quick money rather than working for it.
I hate the games industry today. Worst console generation ever
How many times we gotta teach you this lesson old mam..
Where’s Fair Games? Marathon? Then let’s not forget cancelled games like Factions and SpiderVerse?
I love how the comments to articles like this are always a small minority crying that nobody wants these games. I am not sure who this “nobody” is but Rivals hit 20 MILLION players recently.
Open your eyes. The people telling them no are the 0.1% vocal minority. The rest of us just like fun games.
Oh, Boy. Looks like Hermit The Hulst is going to be the next scapegoat CEO to fail at Sony. You take a hard look at these AAA live-service games and you tell us hardcore Sony gamers why they will fell victim to the gaming industry collapse. Good luck with Fairgames, cause I’m pretty sure it will be DOA.
The comments are so funny when people are like “no one wants this” meanwhile live service games make the majority of the funding in the gaming industry. If people didn’t want it, they wouldn’t be spending like crazy. Do some live service games fail? Sure. Do some single player games fail, too? Sure.
Make a good game and no one will care if it’s live service or not. Plain and simple.
@ Sparkles – We’re not the minority, in the sense you would say we are in your context. We ARE however the minority of those willing to say something about it. Insider-gaming isn’t exactly a major website with substantial traffic compared to N4G or Games Beat, for example. But, yeah, there’s a lot of consumers that feel just as we do and Concord is a perfect example, we’re just the only ones crazy enough to voice it in a comments section. Most gamers are just passive observers, but they vote with their wallets, a select few actually voice their opinions. You think the 60s mentality ended? I didnt
