PlayStation Gives Reason For PSN Outage; Offers Amends

Sony has given an actual reason for the PlayStation Network (PSN) outage that brought the service down for roughly 20 hours on Friday and Saturday.

In a post late Saturday night on social media, the company blamed the outage on an “operational issue”. Specifics on the issue weren’t given nor was anything said about preventing another issue. However, PlayStation did, once again, apologize for what happened.

“Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue,” they said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience.”

As a make good for nearly a full day of service being lost, PlayStation is giving all PlayStation Plus members five extra days. The extension will automatically be added to all plans.

The PSN originally went down on Friday, February 7 around 6pm ET. The outage impacted users across the globe, taking down the ability to sign in, play online, and even access the PlayStation Store. It started to come back around 3:40PM ET on Saturday, February 8.

As the service was offline, the company didn’t provide any updates to players aside from an acknowledgement of PSN being offline hours after it went down. The next update came to state that service was restored.

  • If you can only game on Friday, or early Saturday then you lost a week. 5 days is a slap in the face. Give a week at least what a joke.

  • PS Plus is a rip-off. Mandating a subscription for online multi-player is a joke. And 5 days of free service is more of the same.

  • I was able to get a lot of much needed house work done. I was bummed at first since Saturday mornings are my best uninterrupted gaming time. I do think Playstation should extend or pause PS+ for a few days. It is a paid service.

  • What couldent give us like 20 daller store credit? We gave y’all enough money y’all could afford to give everyone 20 bucks I knew I should of never got a ps5 not my fault I wanted meth but shit happeneds

  • Giving 5 extra days to a monthly service that just renews automatically. Gee, thanks. How about a discount on next month’s subscription. That’d actually be a difference.

  • If it was really just an “Operational issue”, they would’ve just said that in the beginning then asked for patience from the community, tsk tsk.

  • Yep it’s a slap in the face what about the regular ps customers who don’t have a membership whom also spends money whom was affected on the non play for 2 days I play world of warships legends I lost 2 days of premium that I haven’t been credited back yet that of days I couldn’t play because of no fault of ours a giant rip off only for members what a kick in the teeth ps once u stop payment u lose everything anyway scam

  • Still hate that Sony doesn’t have a better way to inform people of what’s going on. Why are we STILL reduced to utilizing online forums and reddit threads for updates when Sony could have something right there on their own Ps5 homescreen that users could quickly and easily click on for status updates? Drives me crazy…

  • Funny how they act like it’s nothing when we pay for our subscriptions and games and claim to be better then xbox but you offer 5 day extention… You dont hear about XBox going down for a D DoS attack and what do you mean it went back up at 3 pm ET…it went on for like 2 minutes and down again. I couldn’t get of till about 10pm central time. Couldn’t play for 2 days not 20 hours. You all are really helping me with deciding to go with xbox or pc gaming. Don’t insult your customers with this 5 day crap

  • That’s complete B.S. My son plays sports. Friday and Saturday are his main days he can play. All 3 of my boys play seige on Friday nights. I had to deal with the being upset all night checking their games every 15/20mins so it didn’t just affect the kids but the parents too. And the fact playstation didn’t release and info or updates made it 10xs worse. They should of atleast made a statement and released updates. Their way of making up for it is to give the. 5 days of ps plus…. seriously. What a out the people that don’t have ps plus. My opinion the least they can do is released a sincere apology and give everyone a free month of playstation plus (rather they have it now or not)
