PlayStation 6 Will Have AMD Chip With Backwards Compatibility, It’s Claimed

The next-generation PlayStation 6 (PS6) is already well in development, and major decisions on the console have already been made.

According to a new report from Reuters, the new PS6 will, once again, feature an AMD chip in the system. The report says that Sony and Intel were in talks, but Intel lost the contract to AMD back in 2022.

The report claims that one of the disputes between Intel and Sony involved how much profit Intel would make from each processor. On top of the price dispute, backwards compatibility is said to be a major sticking point with Sony.

“Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives,” the report states. “Ensuring backward compatibility with prior versions of the PlayStation would have been costly and taken engineering resources.”

Whether that means backwards compatibility with just PS5 and PS4 games or that means further back in the PlayStation catalog is currently unknown.

What do you think of Sony staying with AMD for the PS6 processor? Join the discussion in the new Insider Gaming Forums!

Nice. This could mean it gets native PS5/PS4 Games Support.

This and the MLID video about the PS6 has got me very excited about the PS6 although it might not be out until 2028... But still it sounds like the PS6 and PS6 Pro will be a bigger upgrade compared to the PS5/PS5 Pro... So I can't wait until it's 2028 for sure! 👀

I wouldn't be suprised if the PS6 Pro is like $900 without the drive. And we'd be lucky if we get a massive generational leap at $600 if that's the base PS6.

I mean yeah I think the price might play a big rule in how much of a generational leap the base PS6 will be... But I do indeed see the PS6 Pro costing a lot and been the leap we're looking for... But whatever happens when the PS6 is out so do I expect the leap to be more than what the difference was between the PS4 and PS5 though!
