Phantom Blade Zero Dev: ‘Nobody Needs Xbox’

Update (04/08):

S-GAME has issued a statement responding to this quote:

“Recently, we noticed that some media outlets have claimed to have interviewed an unnamed developer from S-GAME at Chinajoy, who seems to have made some statements regarding the release platforms and strategy for Phantom Blade Zero.

We want to clarify that these claimed statements do not represent S-GAME’s values or culture, as we believe in making our game accessible to everyone and have not ruled out any platforms for Phantom Blade Zero. We are hard at work on both the development and publishing fronts to ensure that as many players as possible can enjoy our game at release and in the future.

Our team is looking forward to sharing more development updates soon, and we are excited to bring our world premiere demo to Gamescom this month!”

Original Report Continues:

In a recent report published by a Brazilian outlet attending ChinaJoy 2024, it was claimed that a Phantom Blade Zero developer had some harsh words for the Xbox ecosystem. It was explained by the developers of both Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero that they don’t have exclusivity agreements in place with Sony – they just don’t see the need to bring their games to Xbox.

That’s a Bit Harsh

Per the post on the Brazilian outlet, when an S-GAME developer was questioned on the platform distribution of Phantom Blade Zero at ChinaJoy 2024, part of their response was scalding:

Nobody needs this platform.

Thanks to Icon-Era’s John Elden Ring for the source

The anonymous developer was talking about Xbox. Reportedly, they went on to say that the console platform isn’t popular in Asia – which is true – and that Microsoft has made it tough to develop games for the Xbox Series X|S by creating ‘a very overloaded ecosystem.’

Black Myth: Wukong is being released on August 20 on PlayStation 5 and PC, while Phantom Blade Zero is assumed to be dropping in 2026. I’ve linked these two titles here because both S-GAME and Game Science were at ChinaJoy 2024, and the Brazilian article makes it clear (from the developers) that while both games aren’t being released on Xbox, it isn’t because they have secured an exclusivity deal with Sony.

They just don’t feel that anyone needs the Xbox platform – which is a pretty inflammatory thing to say. However, it’s no big secret that Microsoft’s hardware sales are falling and the team looks intent on relying on streaming and cloud-based solutions, so who knows, perhaps even Xbox doesn’t need Xbox.

  • Ummm…. Last I remembered Black Myth is coming to Xbox unless there something new that got released that said it

  • Hmmmm Xbox has been around the last 23yrs. Millions of people enjoy the console. What bad article, and to believe a Dev said those cruel words.

    • If the dev actually said it, and the reporter is accurately reporting what theu said, it’s a good article. Articles aren’t bad or good depending on whether or not you like what they are reporting but on whether or not it’s true, because fucking duh.

Holy shit we need to filter out the useless dipshits from our hobby before it becomes complete shit again.

  • He’s right. Why spend the money on a port to Xbox. PC, PS5, Switch. All have legitimate reasons to purchase them. Why the fuck am I going to buy limited propriety hardware when everything is going straight to PC day and date. It’s idiotic. If it weren’t for all the sycophants they probably would have halted console production like 3 years ago.

    • Consoles are still necessary, regardless of your views on them. That said, Xbox does seem to be the least justified in existing.

      • PS5 will be day and date on PC in the next couple years, so by the original posters admission, who needs a PS5?

        • PS5 doesn’t have much coming out with next few years. Every game won’t come to PC either day and date. They will be timed exclusives for some .some will never come to PC. They have put out their plans already. Everything will not be coming to PC. I hear this over and over. But their are PS3 and PS4 games. That PC players are still crying about. That never came even though it has been rumored for over a decade.

        • You can look up the article. I think it was Forbes. The ceo of Playstation said the point of them putting some games on PC. Is to get PC players to buy a Playstation. They will put some to draw people into the PS eco system.

      • It is 100% confirmed Black Myth Wukong is being released on Xbox it’s just being delayed due to technical issues, most likely Series S limitations.

    • Unfortunately that just isn’t true. Even the new GTA is expected to shaft PC players with a delayed PC launch like they did with 5. PC often gets shafted, you can also tell PlayStation had no intent to seriously shift to PC when they started releasing games that had been out on playstation for years, but released them on PC at full MSRP, or when they enacted the PlayStation account requirement for helldivers. Also 90% of their player base originally used platstations before use of the internet didn’t require a subscription, they stopped that so then they started the exclusivity wars. I doubt Sony would stop at anything to keep making consoles.

  • The only console worth owning is a Switch, but barely. PS5 and Xbox are shit, and all their games are ported to PC anyway. Sony and MS can go to hell.

    • Why are PC players still trying to port ps3 and ps4 games lol
If every game is ported to PC. This is a lie from someone who has always had a PC and every console. Every game isn’t ported to PC. PC players are still crying about bloodborne. That game is 10 years old. People are emulating games. Every game isn’t ported .

  • Funny. Well I spoke to developer at the Summer GameFest that’s not what they said. In fact I talked to the CEO and what he said was they are so considering the platform but had no plans as of yet.

  • MS has survived for over 20 years without massive support from any outside developers. Two games aren’t going to break them. Especially with one coming out 2 years from now.

  • Having an attitude like that is an excellent way to get me to NOT buy your game. I have a PS5 and an Xbox. I’ll save my money for developers that actually want new customers.

  • It’s not that nobody needs Xbox. He wouldn’t be saying that if the platform was easier to develop for, like he said.

    • Let’s be honest games aren’t selling like they used to. Look at this top games it’s always COD, madden, 2k stuff like that. So somebody saying they don’t anybody is ridiculous. Helldivers 2 would of flopped if it didn’t go to PC. The biggest player base is on PC. Putting a game on medium is risky. When games are 60 to 120 dollars now. Square enix even said ff7 rebirth didn’t do well just being on Playstation.

  • Of course the devs name was left anonymous because they know people will go after them coward, boycott

  • Yeah, who needs competition to drive innovation. Everything should be a monopoly.

    ?

An irresponsible comment that hopefully is just mostly bad translation. That’s not even noting the fact that Xbox is the closest thing to a dedicated PC for gaming. If you’re releasing for pc, it’s negligible effort to bring it over to Xbox, just a few nuances in memory handling, which DirectX can mostly take care of.

And while PC maybe the best platform for gaming, there’s no beating a console for plug and Play. No drivers to worry about, hardware incompatibilities, no performance differences between Intel or AMD cpu (or certain CPU generations causing games to crash…), or ATI versus Nvidia. If a game is crashing due to hardware, no need (for the developer) to go through multiple vendors to get the patch.

Even with streaming becoming much more viable now, with both GeForce now and Xbox providing very smooth experiences, the need for native will always be around. And because of that, as consumers, we should all be uplifting the companies competing instead of trying to knock one down.

  • But the sad part is that is it’s not entirely true. Or only true to a certain extent. Unfortunately, a lot of the complexity comes from the existence of having both the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, with Microsoft’s requirements of feature parity. The existence of the S|X ecosystem is a win for consumers and gamers, as it allows more individuals to join the ecosystem on a smaller budget or take the premium experience, but at their own choice.

But in a developer’s eyes, it creates difficulty. But Microsoft is really good with working with the developers to get their games working on the platform and out the door.

  • I mean no one NEEDS video games either. No one NEEDS to buy this dev’s product. Entertainment is more often a want than a need. So yes, no one NEEDS Xbox.

So what was their point again?

  • “We were too lazy to put in the time and effort to make it for other consoles. So f*** this entire community of gamers”

  • Well, in Asia, Xbox is really not popular compared to PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC.

PlayStation basically owned Asia right now with their marketing and official supports everywhere combined with Sony Electronics, some are partnered with local sellers. Nintendo also has their branch.

Although, they should’ve not said that I think.

  • I don’t give a fuck exclusive or whatever. If it’s exclusive, I’ll just move on. so why the fuck I wanted to know Xbox or PS5???

  • It’s sad to see devs continue to be lazy and out an entire community of gamers. Shame on them. They can do better

  • Nobody needs any console. If you can afford it PC is always better. That being said this is why I do not buy Asian developers games who do not support the western gamer. Capcom cool..Fromsoft mostly cool. Everyone else..screw em
