It looks like it will be a while before Bungie drops shows off what its been working on with the Marathon reboot.
According to Paul Tassi at Forbes, sources tell him that there are no plans for any “significant reveals” for Marathon until spring 2025 at the earliest. Tassi adds that there may be something small to give a few updates on the game, but nothing major will come until next year.
What Is Going On With Marathon?
As of writing, Marathon still has a 2025 release window for Bungie. The game will also have the expected price point of $40 that has recently been floating around.
“There were initial monetization concerns that came to a head when free-to-play The Finals came out and had trouble in that area,” Tassi writes. “Helldivers 2 being $40 and being a hit for Sony secured the premium cost idea. Concord’s recent failure at $40 did not change this, and it is simply too far along to pivot back to F2P restructuring anyway, so it will launch like this, barring anything seismic.”
There will also be a battle pass system and cosmetic shop for microtransactions.
As far as the game itself, the transition to a hero system akin to that of Apex Legends was reiterated. The characters in the game will have unique abilities along with the ability to customize the gear and guns you find during your runs.
Regarding the change at the top with Joe Ziegler replacing Chris Barrett as Game Director, that’s when the move to individual heroes came to be. It’s also said, however, that the game’s art style has remained in tact through the switch over.
Lastly, it’s claimed that Marathon is in a “tough spot” with its release. Bungie has had issues with trust from Sony lately due to the struggles of Destiny 2, leading to a number of layoffs and restructuring within the company. After the failed launch of Concord, there is heavier pressure for Marathon to be a success for Sony as a new first-party game.
