The Nintendo Switch is now the best-selling mainline video game console in United States (US) history, passing the PlayStation 2 (PS2).
According to the latest data from Circana, the switch has hit 46.6 million (M) units sold in the US since its 2017 release. While a specific number wasn’t revealed, that puts in past the PS2. The only system that has outsold the Switch in the US is the handheld-only Nintendo DS.
The Switch passing the PS2 in the US has been expected for a few months now. In June, Circana’s data showed that the console was only 1.1M units behind Sony’s best-selling system. Globally, however, the Switch still has a way to go.

As of writing, the Switch has sold 146.4M units as of September 30. That puts it just under 14 million of the 160M PS2s that Sony says it sold worldwide. With the reveal and release of the Nintendo Switch 2 merely months away, it feels unlikely that the Switch will catch the PS2 in total sales, but it’s still possible.
