New Hitman Game Isn’t Coming Soon, IO Interactive CCO Says

A new Hitman game isn’t coming anytime soon. IO Interactive confirmed that a new game in the story of Agent 47 isn’t in the current plans due to work on other titles.

The confirmation comes via an interview with Eurogamer in which IO Interactive co-owner and chief creative officer Christian Elverdam talks about the state and future of the series.

“Right now a major, major new Hitman game: that’s a little bit on hiatus, as we’re building another agent fantasy that’s also taking up a lot of our time,” he said. “But obviously we’ll come back to beloved Agent 47. He’s still very much in the heart of this company.”

That other “agent fantasy” is a new James Bond game currently in development. The game, which was announced back in 2020, features an original James Bond origin story. IO Interactive is also developing an online fantasy RPG. No official details on what that game entails have been revealed.

The Future of Hitman

If you’re worried about what that means for everyone’s favorite assassin, rest easy. Elverdam says that updates to the current game, including new features, aren’t going away entirely.

“[W]e have such a wonderful platform where we can keep experimenting with what the formula can do and what people expect of it,” he said.

Hitman World of Assassination, which Hitman 3 was rebranded as earlier this year, features content from both Hitman 1 and Hitman 2. The game received a new Freelancer mode in January that has players plan out missions and features roguelike elements.

What do you make of the news that there won’t be a new Hitman game in the near future?
