Microsoft continues to not be happy with Apple. In a new statement surrounding the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) investigation into the cloud gaming market, Microsoft says that Apple is making it “impossible to effectively monetize” its cloud gaming offering.
According to Microsoft, Apple’s commission fee is “neither economically sustainable nor justifiable”.
“The 30% commission fee makes it impossible for Microsoft to effectively monetize its cloud gaming service offering,” the company says.
Microsoft continues by calling out Apple’s requirement for services to make content, features, and subscriptions available for in-app purchases within the app. They say that it would require third-part developers needing to make major changes to their games to comply with the requirement, thus limiting potential competition.
“Beyond that, from a practical perspective, CGSPs have no way to ensure that third-party game developers recode their games to comply with this requirement,” they said. “As a result, the restriction effectively precludes CGSPs from offering third-party developed games.”
Lastly, Microsoft calls issue with Guideline 3.1.1 from Apple which says that app developers can’t link to outside sources to purchase subscriptions.
“Apps in this section cannot, within the app, encourage users to use a purchasing method other than in-app purchase, except as set forth in 3.1.3(a),” Apple’s guidelines read. For the record, Guideline 3.1.3(a) allows exceptions for “reader” apps such as magazines, newspapers, etc..
Apple has not responded to the latest statement from Microsoft. In August, however, the company said that developers aren’t having many issues with the IAP requirement.”
A provisional decision from the CMA is expected to come in November. All parties have until the end of September to respond to the investigation.
