Microsoft Spends $1 Billion a Year To Bring Third-Party Titles to Game Pass

In a monumental report covering the state of play for Microsoft and Xbox, Bloomberg dove deep into the impact of the Game Pass subscription service. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea and it has garnered a mixed response from developers over the years, but one staggering statistic in Bloomberg’s write-up reveals just how invested Microsoft is in the platform.

It was said that the tech titan spends $1 billion annually to pull third-party games onto Game Pass, often parting ways with millions of dollars just to put pen to paper and get the deals signed.

‘The Promise of Exposure’

In the gargantuan report written by Bloomberg’s Dina Bass and Cecilia D’Anastasio, everything from the recent clash between Microsoft and the CMA to the potential of a handheld Xbox device was explored.

At one point, the conversation, which was focused majorly on Sarah Bond’s Xbox presidency, turned to Game Pass. In a retrospective, we got a glimpse of how the subscription service surfaced with a humble library and a low price point before becoming a massive effort that weighed heavily on Microsoft’s coffers.

It was a paradigm shift for Microsoft, standing up something that would see value trickle in over time rather than relying on that one supersized launch to rake in a substantial payday. That’s what Sarah Bond alluded to, touching on the alteration in the operating model:

There’s a difference between managing a network effect and maximizing the value of a single game.

Bloomberg then mentioned that Microsoft spends a whopping $1 billion a year bringing third-party games into the Game Pass ecosystem, which has been modelled recently as a ‘Play Anywhere’ system that transcends simple home consoles.

Game Pass was also a major adjustment for publishers. To sweeten the deal, Microsoft now spends $1 billion a year getting third-party games on the subscription service.

The largesse has been more than enough to win over small publishers, to whom it offers flat fees of millions of dollars upfront to include their titles, along with a portion of subscription revenue and the promise of exposure they couldn’t count on getting otherwise.

Owing to inflation, Game Pass has recently increased in price, and the games that take pole position in the library chop and change, but there’s no doubting the power it has as a subscription-based product. That notion is set to improve, too – next month, the first Call of Duty game will grace the service in the form of Black Ops 6.

It already incorporates titles from the Ubisoft Connect and EA Play services, making it a seriously stacked offering for gamers worldwide, and it’s getting better all the time.

Sarah Bond and the rest of the crew at Xbox have immense faith in the product, and with a seeming desire to move away from console gaming, it’s only a matter of time before a seamlessly connected Game Pass experience is the firm’s foremost focus.

For smaller teams Game pass has probably brought them to an audience that they likely wouldnt have gotten to and probably brought them revenue that they would never have seen. Im yet to find a negative about Game Pass.

Right now im currently playing Frostpunk 2 which came out today. Its a game I would've bought for $60+

Said it in a few posts about game pass, personally there's just too much value in it for me not to have it.

This is just my opinion on this subscription service not only with Game Pass but in general as a whole ie Netflix, etc

For some still (including myself obviously) ownership is a huge thing. These subscription services are basically rental service. So there's that part of the consumers.

For the devs I'd have to guess units sold both physical & digi > whatever game pass deal they agreed to.

Again this is just speculation on my part since I don't have Xbox One or series.

Very interesting tho if this leads to MS changing strategy about this whole thing.

Yes, basically this. I'm a PC Gamer and i can't believe how Gamepass changed my life of Gamer. I mean, i'm 40, and the time to invest in this hobby is less than before but it remains one of my prefer hobby. Gamepass gives me the unique chance to try different games, often triple AAA, choosing to buy the only ones that impresse me. For example, i finished Starfield with Gamepass and i love the game. Now, i've already bought the First DLC to thank the developers and also because i'm really curious about the Varunn factions.

I've already bought the Diablo expansion and all of DLC and expansions for the AOE franchise and AOM Retold. The same for Metro and many other games.

Without Gamepass i would have spent a lot of Money trying to find the right games for me.

When MS says that players who play with gamepass are going to spend 50% more than the other ones: it's true.

Losing the "console wars" (i hate this term because everyone should play on the devices he prefers) it gives to XBOX a future game change. Gamepass Is the future: developers are Happy, players are Happy, Xbox Is Happy.

I'm new here and i would like to Say hello to all of you.

It's a beatiful community.

Ciao.

But is gamepass lucrative? If not I really don't understand what Xbox is trying to do from a business perspective. They must be just doubling down on building a foundation of new business tactics in hopes of securing a larger footprint in the gaming industry as a whole.

Fun Fact: Twitch has never been profitable.

See MS is a billion dollar company whether it is lucrative or not, it dosent impact much. Game pass is only something that is unique towards that platform. Nowadays they need a ROI in newer games that’s why we are seeing some games coming in Xbox. So it’s the same case as Amazon owning Twitch. Not relatable but just an example.

Game Pass is the best consumer thing in the world, but dear god it has been Xbox's biggest mistake for their business. It's devalued their games, allowing you to pick em up day 1 with a cheaper subscription cost. It's become a money pit for them to throw money down to keep titles on Game Pass or get new ones on Game Pass. And it has a cap. Eventually they won't be able to get new people on the service in the numbers that Xbox / Microsoft expects or needs.

We dont ever get the numbers we've been told by the lies of Phil Spencer that its profitable so you have to take it as it is and believe it (until you have no reason to). In terms of the business model they will only stick with it for so long if it is indeed losing money. There's no way they will continue to back it if it is losing money year on year.

Gaming should want it to succeed, some people may not care for it but there are many others who definitely get their monies worth from the service, myself being one.

One must wonder this is the reason why Sony doesn't push "Playstation Now" as much as it can because they probably foreso this 🧐

Or maybe PlayStation brand is strong enough they didn't this stuff?

On somewhat related note didn't Sony-Microsoft deal used to have cloud gaming deal of some sort? Whatever happened to that one lol

I think Sony know that if they push their own version of the service AND offer 1st party games on Day 1 on that service, they'll start seeing diminishing sales returns.

Better for them to have the premium service that houses a lot of games AND also have their releases as normal. Game Pass isn't the kind of deal you'd wanna replicate right now.
