Minecraft and Merlin Entertainments have signed a $110 million deal to bring Mojang’s popular franchise to theme parks in the US and the UK.
According to a report by The Guardian, Merlin is putting in $110 million (£85m) to develop two attractions. These Minecraft attractions will open in 2026 and 2027, either in existing theme parks or as new installations in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Kayleen Walters, the vice president of franchise development at Microsoft Gaming, has stated, “We are everywhere digitally; Merlin is everywhere physically.” Walters emphasized a “shared vision” between the two companies, with Mojang and Microsoft being experts on the Minecraft brand and Merlin specializing in location-based experiences.
Merlin Entertainment has extensive experience creating theme parks and attractions across the world. Some of their most notable projects are based on popular franchises such as Peppa Pig, LEGO, and Jumanji. It will be exciting to see what they develop for Minecraft. Scott O’Neil, the chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, expressed, “Bringing Minecraft to life is going to be one of the greatest joys; this is just the beginning, and our aspirations are very ambitious.”
