You’re sure to come across shiny red stones in The First Berserker Khazan—these are Soulstones. Destroying them is a good thing, but if you’re unsure why you must do this, our explainer tells you what they do and how to use them in the Soulslike.
Souls games encourage players to explore and work things out for themselves. Very little is given away most of the time. I’d say The First Berserker Khazan explains a little, but you’re on your own for the majority of the title. Netherworld Energy is mostly a mystery, and even the act of jumping can be a headscratcher.
Soulstones also get a similar treatment. Smashing one gives you a confusing prompt, and it’s not until later that you’re told what it all means. But we can get to the bottom of this now.
What Does “You’ve Destroyed a Mysterious Energy-Emitting Ore” Mean in The First Berserker Khazan?

Destroying Soulstones produces the “You’ve destroyed a mysterious energy-emitting orb” message in The First Berserker Khazan, and this gives you a new type of currency you can’t use right away.
Soulstones are scattered around The First Berserker Khazan, and they’re small red rocks usually hidden away or tucked in hard-to-reach places. Sometimes they’re just around the corner, or you might need to throw a Javelin at one.
Each level has a set number to find and break, and doing so rewards you with Soulstones to be redeemed for handy rewards. Once you’ve gotten a couple or so, you need to know how to use them.
Where to Use Soulstones in The First Berserker Khazan?

You unlock the ability to use Soulstones once you reach Mission 3: Forgotten Temple (Embars Ruins).
Midway through the Embar Ruins level, you meet Daphrona for the first time. She’s on the linear path to complete the level, and it’s evident that the Phantom Blade dislikes her. You won’t feel the same when you realise she has a penchant for Soulstones.
You unlock the ability to use Soulstones after a brief conversation with her. Simply choose the dialog option to execute the trade, and each time you want to use Soulstones, you need to choose one of two stats to upgrade.
Choices commonly fall between the same few attributes: Lacrima Gain, Health Recovery, Stamina Recovery, and more. Your playstyle might differ from mine, but I feel you get enough Lacrima throughout The First Berserker Khazan. This makes the Lacrima option redundant in my eyes and makes many of the dilemmas much easier.
The more stats you upgrade, the more Soulstones you need per transaction. It gets to the point where you need three and four Soulstones for a new level increase—and it escalates further throughout the game. It’s a great way to reward you for exploring and navigating each level.
Daphrona relocates to The Crevice once you finish the mission. Here, you can redeem any further Soulstones in The First Berserker Khazan.
