You’ll occasionally find that, despite your best efforts, your production facilities aren’t cutting it in Frostpunk 2. You need more Food, Coal, and Prefabs to survive the encroaching Whiteout. While it’s a gamble, you can run Emergency Shifts in Frostpunk 2 to increase output. Does the risk outweigh the benefits, though?
How to Start and End Emergency Shifts in Frostpunk 2
To start and end Emergency Shifts in Frostpunk 2, select any of your production Districts—Food, Extraction, Industrial, or Logistics—to open its overview display. This additional HUD includes information on its requirements, deposit, total output, area effects, and the staffing you have in place, with a max of 100%. Below all of this information, there’s a circular button with a clock and an upward-facing arrow. This is the Emergency Shift activator. Click on that anytime you wish to start or stop a Shift.
Be wary, however! The longer you run an Emergency Shift, the more likely you endure injuries and the lower your overall trust level falls. The citizens will start despising you, which can jeopardize your reign as Steward!

When to Use Emergency Shifts
As its name would suggest, use Emergency Shifts in emergencies. While they’re potent and capable of completely turning the tide of your settlement to ensure you survive the cold, the downsides will creep up on you quickly.
I like to pop Emergency Shifts only when the situation is dire or when I absolutely need more Prefabs or Materials, for example, to construct a new building immediately. Otherwise, allow normal production means to continue.
Alternatively, you might find it wise to activate Emergency Shifts shortly before a Whiteout to stockpile everything you can before the big storm hits. It’s an intelligent way to create a safety net.
