How to Play Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test on PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC—Release Date Explained

Splitgate 2 continues to evolve through its upcoming PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Open Alpha Test. 1047 Games has been working on the title for a while, and Splitgate 2 has already been through testing on PC. But it’s time for the real deal with the Crossplay Alpha test.

The first Splitgate arrived when Halo Infinite was on the scene. It was a fast-paced sci-fi shooter with a unique portal mechanic, but player count figures show it never took off. However, Splitgate 2 is looking to establish itself as the first-person multiplayer shooter.

Splitgate 2 has had an Early Access Alpha, but the February 2025 Sony State of Play declared a Crossplay PlayStation Alpha Test was inbound. Let’s show you what you need to do to lock and load.

Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test Release Date

The Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test goes live on February 27 across all applicable platforms.

The Open Alpha test is looking to end February on a high. With live-service games around it receiving new seasons, Splitgate 2 is looking to make an immediate impact and show players what the future looks like.

You can download the Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test for free and start playing it immediately once it’s live.

Unlike the initial Splitgate 2 Alpha on Steam, there is no sign-up process for the Crossplay Open Alpha Test. It’s a free-to-play, open-to-all Alpha Test encouraging as many players as possible to get involved.

It’s fairly standard, but here’s a run-through of what you need to do when the time comes:

  1. Wait for February 27.
  2. Decide which platform you want to play Splitgate 2 on.
  3. Go to the format’s storefront: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Steam.
  4. Search for Splitgate 2.
  5. Check the game’s page for the Open Alpha Test.
  6. Download it.
  7. Once it’s ready, you can hop in and get cooking!

The original Splitgate did have early issues with servers and capacity. However, I imagine 1047 Games has prepared for this possibility.

What to Expect From Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Test

Splitgate 2 Lead Writer Nate Dern has promised a variety of modes, maps, and the chance for players to actively influence the game’s release.

A PlayStation Blog with Dern from February 12 is quite eye-opening. He’s excited for the new 8v8v8 Multi-Team Portal Warfare game mode, and it takes place on Splitgate’s biggest map yet. There’s also an array of “Unique abilities, equipment, perks, and more, all designed to keep each game exciting and fresh.”

Dern also talks about the importance of player involvement and feedback: “We’ve been listening carefully to players from earlier playtests and we’ve already made improvements to our game mechanics and level design, especially portaling opportunities across our maps.”

What do you think? Does Splitgate 2 look improved and flashy enough to compete with the likes of Call of Duty? Will you be giving the Open Alpha Test a go when it goes live?

We interviewed Ian Proulx—co-founder and CEO at 1047 Games—back in August 2024 where Anti-Cheat, Esports, various updates, and much more were discussed about Splitgate 2.
