How to Get Metal Detector in Atomfall

Atomfall has a lot of handy gadgets and trinkets, but the Metal Detector supersedes most. Its function is simple, but the rewards for successfully using it are wonderful. Let’s help you track down a Metal Detector to add to your inventory.

Who hasn’t used a Metal Detector at some point in their lives? Being a kid with a Metal Detector is like being a kid in a candy shop—only without any candy, or any clue what to do. Atomfall includes the classic Metal Detector in its gameplay, and while you may think it’s a throwaway inclusion, it’s extremely helpful.

If you’re wandering around and still haven’t found one yet, here’s a guaranteed location that’s easy enough to find.

Where to Find a Metal Detector in Atomfall

I found a Metal Detector at the coordinates 29.1E and 73.9N in the Slatten Dale biome in Atomfall.

Slatten Dale is the first area you start in, making this easy enough! But it’s in a more obscure part of the map you can easily miss. Open your map and use the first screenshot above as a reference point.

Head to the location—making sure to beware of Outlaws along the way. Once you get there, be careful about going near the water. The water is teeming with deadly fish looking to chomp on you, cause the Bleed effect, and ultimately sap you of healthy supplies.

I stuck to the edges of the water and timed my jumps carefully. Eventually, once you reach the coordinates, you see a dead Outlaw on the ground. Using the second screenshot I’ve provided above, you can see the Metal Detector.

Either pick it up directly or search the Outlaw for supplies as the Metal Detector appears anyway. Thankfully, the Metal Detector has its own slot in your inventory under Tools—you don’t need to faff around looking for space!

How to Use The Metal Detector in Atomfall

A prompt appears in the bottom-left corner telling you the Metal Detector can be used to dig up a cache in Atomfall.

Here’s a quick guide to the basics of using a Metal Detector:

  1. Explore Atomfall’s biomes and search every square inch of the map.
  2. Now and again, a Metal Detector symbol appears in the corner of your screen.
  3. Press the specified button to equip the device—or you can also select it manually from the inventory.
  4. Use L2 or LT (or your chosen keybind on PC) to trigger the Metal Detector.
  5. You should see five red lights on the device—these indicate the direction of a stash, not proximity.
  6. Keep moving in the direction that keeps the middle of the red lights active.
  7. Eventually, all five lights start beeping and buzzing.
  8. When this happens, press R2, RT (or the PC keybind) to start digging away at the floor.
  9. If you’ve done this correctly, you dig up a hidden stash.

Stashes can be a gold mine of supplies from crafting resources to ammo. I find the process doesn’t take too long and always do it when the Metal Detector icon appears.

There you have it, that’s how to get a Metal Detector. Be sure to check out the Atomfall Trophy and Achievement List, and if you have any comments about the game in general, drop a comment below.
