You know, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Necromancer is my all-time favorite class in Diablo IV because it’s not. I hate its basic skills and often avoid the class altogether. But that doesn’t mean I won’t occasionally jump in for a meta build to run end-game content with a unique scythe like Black River!
What is Black River?
Black River is a unique Necromancer scythe that deals damage and numerous unique affixes that can bolster a build tenfold.
Its unique effect, Corpse Explosion, consumes four additional corpses around the target corpse, dealing increased damage in a larger radius for each affected corpse. The amount of increased damage and the size of the effective radius varies depending on the drop.
How to Get Black River in Diablo 4
To acquire the Black River, prepare for a long and arduous journey. Unfortunately, getting this unique item to drop is an absolute grind.
Black River drops from mobs by opening chests as a reward for defeating bosses and dungeons. One of the best ways to farm Black River is by completing World Events, like Helltide, and tackling World Bosses, like Ashava the Pestilent or Avarice the Gold Cursed.
It’s important to note that Black River will not appear in the loot pool until World Tier 3: Nightmare or World Tier 4: Torment. Furthermore, the higher your difficulty, the more likely you’ll receive a unique item drop.

Best Necromancer Build for Black River
With its unique effect to bolster Corpse Explosion, the best Necromancer builds to take full advantage of this effect will revolve around a Corpse Explosion Build in Diablo 4.
This build will cause mobs to explode the various corpses left behind, dealing additional damage to surrounding enemies. It’s a fantastic AOE build capable of clearing large mobs with relative ease.
