How to Fix Starfield Stuttering Every Few Seconds

Following the lackluster release of Shattered Space, countless players report stuttering issues plaguing their playthroughs. It’s a long-standing problem that first occurred in 2023 when Starfield launched worldwide, and it’s unfortunately still a problem today. Here are a few potential fixes to help deal with Starfield stuttering every few seconds!

Potential Fixes for Starfield Stuttering Every Few Seconds

There are numerous reasons why your Starfield is stuttering every few seconds, from mod conflicts to corrupted files to poor optimization within the most recent update or expansion. While certainly not a guarantee, the following fixes may help resolve your graphical woes and allow you to enjoy the space exploration game once more:

Disable Motion Blur

One of the most problematic graphical settings in the universe is motion blur. It never looks good and always tanks performance, even on high-end gaming computers. Here’s how to disable motion blur in Starfield:

  • Before loading a save file, navigate to ‘Settings’ in the main menu.
  • Choose ‘Display,’ then scroll down until you find Motion Blur.
  • Disable Motion Blur; while you’re at it, disable Upscaling and Depth of Field, too.

Install Starfield on an SSD

It’s becoming more commonplace for new releases to require an SSD instead of an HDD for storage. An SSD is faster, reduces stuttering, and decreases load times.

If you have an SSD available, consider switching Starfield over from your regular hard drive to improve response times and reduce the risk of stuttering!

Update Your GPU

An out-of-date GPU driver can easily cause a game like Starfield to stutter every few seconds. To start, close out of Starfield entirely and then run Nvidia GeForce Experience. Once it loads, navigate to the ‘Drivers’ tab at the top and check for an update. If one is available, go ahead and download and install the update.

Check Your Mods

Occasionally, user-made mods considerably tank performance in Starfield and other Bethesda titles, like Skyrim and Fallout 4. One such mod conflict that many report is Starfield Fleet Expansion, which causes stuttering for many players. If this mod is installed, consider disabling it momentarily, then check performance.

If you have an extensive mod list, you may need to move down the list, disable mods individually, and test your game until you find the culprit. It’s not fun, but it’s sometimes part of PC gaming.
