How to Catch Whoppers in Monster Hunter Wilds

Whoppers are the large fish in Monster Hunter Wilds. To be able to fish them without difficulties, you will need to use specific baits. There is a trophy in the game that requires you to fish 30 of these larger fish. The name of the trophy/achievement is A-fish-ionado.

For your convenience, we have decided to write this guide with essential tips to fish the whoppers of Monster Hunter Wilds more easily, including the location of the best fishing spot in the game.

How to obtain the A-fish-ionado trophy/achievement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Step 1: Complete the Campaign

The first step is a bit lengthy but necessary to make your life easier. Complete the game’s campaign first. The reason for this is that new fishing side quests will be enabled. It is essential that you complete all of them, except the last one, to obtain all the necessary lures.

Step 2: Complete the Fishing Side Quests

Each type of Whopper is attracted to a different bait, so without completing these fishing quests, it will be extremely more difficult and time-consuming to capture them. They can be obtained from the NPC Kanya at the Scarlet Forest region camp. You will need to complete the following missions:

They can be obtained from the NPC Kanya at the Scarlet Forest region camp. You will need to complete the following missions:

  • Fishing: Life, in Microcosm
  • Seeking the Goldenfish
  • Fishing for Favor
  • The Catch of a Lifetime

After completing the side quests mentioned above, she will give you a quest called Razzle Dazzle. At this point, you will have all the baits we need!

Step 3: Farm Time!

The best spot, by FAR, to obtain this trophy is in the Forest, on the “beach” where Uth Duna spawns. For your visual reference, it’s number 17 on the map. There’s a tent nearby, rest on it and set the conditions to Bountiful and Day Time. Remember to equip a Ranger Jewel in your armor to improve your fishing ability.

The whoppers:

  • Great Trevally: A “short” but fat fish that has a gray color. It is attracted to the Tuff Joint Bait.
  • Gastronome Tuna: A large and fat, super fast, blue fish. It is attracted to the Tuff Joint Bait. During my tests, it was the monster that bit the bait most frequently.
  • Goliath Squid: It only appears at night but is the second most frequent bait biter. Use the Tentacle Jigs.
  • Gajau: This is the gigantic fish that has its fin out of the water. It is attracted to the Duster Rigs. It is one of the Whoppers that bite the bait the least frequently, so it’s not worth focusing too much on it.

You can check the number of whoppers you have fished by pressing Options > Info > Monster Field Guide > Aquatic Life Guide.
