The Console Race has been an ongoing war for decades now, as both PlayStation and Xbox have been competing against one another to be the best gaming system on the market. However, a former PlayStation executive thinks the actual race has plateaued.
Is he right? If so, then who has won?
PlayStation Exec Feels Consumers Are Not Interested in More Powerful Consoles
With the recent day and age of powerful consoles, former PlayStation executive, Shawn Layden, believes that a console being more powerful to win is a thing of the past. With PC having the most optimal features, much of a console’s hardware cannot really go any further from here.
“It has plateaued. We’re at the stage of hardware development that I call ‘only dogs can hear the difference’,” said Layden.
Layden, who has worked in the industry for 30 years, believes consoles and gaming hardware need a full overhaul.
“We’ve done these things this way for 30 years, every generation those costs went up and we realigned with it. We’ve reached the precipice now, where the center can’t hold, we cannot continue to do things that we have done before.”
The former CEO of SIE America and chairman of Worldwide Studios was asked about the Console Race by VGC at Gamescon America, where he talked in depth about how he feels about the future of consoles and gaming hardware.
“It’s time for a real hard reset on the business model, a hard reset on what it is to be a video game. It’s not 80 hours, it’s not 90 hours, but if it is that’s a whole different category.”
Layden then went on to say that he feels the ceiling has been reached. Many of the advancements these consoles could provide would not even be noticeable to the human eye.
Sony to Release the PlayStation 5 Pro
Sony is still not done releasing new consoles, however. The company is releasing the PlayStation 5 Pro next month, and many have complained about the price, which is upwards of $700 per console.
With prices constantly increasing while the hardware is only a bit better, it will be interesting to see how these companies plan to switch things up in the future.
