Today, an all-new God of War Ragnarok update dropped – 4.0 – bringing a wealth of fresh content into the game – including New Game Plus. It’s a monumental update for those still neck-deep in Kratos’ (and Atreus’) latest adventure, and it comes with more than just a few tweaks and changes.
While New Game Plus is arguably the shining gem in the latest God of War Ragnarok update, there’s plenty more to be discovered, from a boosted level cap to a wide array of new equipment, enhancements, adjustments, and even area expansions. As updates go, it’s enormous, and the patch notes have to be seen to be believed.
An Update Worthy of the Gods (of War)
Once you’ve completed the main story of God of War Ragnarok, you’ll be able to access New Game Plus at your own discretion – and that’s pretty much as fundamental an experience as ‘NG+’ offers. But enough about that – let’s look at the hefty update in all its glory and see what else is dropping.

But now, here’s the pick of the bunch.
There’s an all-new level cap being introduced, and five different armour sets being added, with all existing armours taking on fresh appearances. There are three new enchantments, some of which provide enormous stats boosts, and new progression paths built into the skills and stats trees.
Niflheim has been expanded, allowing players to assume the role of Kratos or Atreus and fight alongside a range of companions, such as Freya, Sindri, Ingrid, and the legendary Thor. If you feel so inclined, you can also play through Niflheim – and the entire game otherwise – in monochrome, as a brand-new black-and-white render mode has been added.
There are countless adjustments, with Santa Monica Studio having addressed endgame bosses, and taking a look at every difficulty level to add tweaks where needed.
And of course, as with any patch of this size, the God of War Ragnarok update includes a wide variety of bug fixes and amendments.
God of War Ragnarok is available now for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
