Tencent, Guillemot Family Are Said to Consider Buyout of Ubisoft

Feels like it could happen I honestly can't think of any other things that can help Ubisoft at this point. They are beyond the point of tightening the belt and focusing on decent budget quality products, Skull & Bones was one of those games that hurt them and hurt them hard. In some weird way I always thought EA try to scoop them.

I feel sorry for Ubisoft for anyone who would have bought it because no one would be able to understand what's there, but I hope someday they solve their internal problems even with possibly Tencent.

Literally came here to post this - If this happens, I think Ubisoft will quickly go back to producing commercially successful games, but I think their days of pushing new and interesting ideas into the video game space are truly over
They haven’t really pushed the envelope on new and interesting in a while. I think they grew so large so they could release games at a regular cadence but now games cost too much that they MUST succeed.

Regardless, I think we are going to see Ubisoft shed a significant portion of their workforce. I think we will see them pull back on live-service and maybe instead partner with a Chinese company (if Tencent doesn’t buy them) to license out their IP for live-service.

They tried smaller with AC Mirage which people hated because it was all contained in one region. They tried old school with Prince of Persia the Lost Crown, critical success that didn’t sell well. And now big IP based which should have been easy win in Star Wars Outlaws.

I think the constant negativity from the media (honestly it became easy engagement or at least just easy to hate on them) couple with too many games on the market (from all publishers) and a general pullback on consumer spending. It’s just compounded all together.

They have something like 11k employees worldwide - way too bloated and so much duplication due to each studio having their resident workers, no economies of scale

One of the biggest problems at Ubisoft are the higher ups, especially the directors. Why would any project have multiple creative directors in the first place? Wouldn't that cause compromise since they all have equal power over a project, and that makes it a stitched together compromise?

This. you get the feeling every higher up has its input in every game such that all their titles feel/play the exact same
