"Deep Down" is the vaporware Capcom wants for us in the world to forget...
But not me, ever... and I'll you why in a bit.
So alright, here's the announcement trailer:
And this is the gameplay:
So as you can see, in a nutshell, it is Capcom's answer to Fromsoft's Dark Souls at the time.
In my eyes tho?
This is the modern, next-gen VAGRANT STORY.
Yes, that long-abandoned PS1 game by Square-Enix (Squaresoft at the time).
At its core, the Vagrant Story is an RPG dungeon crawler but has a unique combat system similar to Parasite Eve games.
Check out this video of it:
This game is deep (no pun intended).
It's complex it's tough to deal with so it's not for everybody (then or even now I suppose).
The main hook for me tho is the game's claustrophobic dark atmosphere; that sense of you getting deeper & deeper into the unknown underground.
Deep Down seems to give that same vibe.
I've never felt that Vagrant Story feeling again since until Elden Ring & it's numerous dungeons but then again seeing Deep Down it's like legitimately, at least I think so, about diving deep into whatever lurks down its dark world.
Maybe someday, somehow, a suit guy in a Capcom high-level boardroom meeting stands up & says:
"Hey guys remember we still have this game DEEP DOWN..."
Who knows, you know...
One humble fan can always dream.
But not me, ever... and I'll you why in a bit.
