Is AetherSX2 still worth using in 2026, or should I switch to another PS2 emulator?

Hello everyone.

I have been using AetherSX2 on my Android phone for a while now to play some old PS2 favorites and it has worked fairly well overall.

Lately though I have noticed the developer stopped updating it a long time ago and I am wondering if that means I am missing out on compatibility fixes or performance improvements.

Has anyone compared it recently to alternatives like NetherSX2 or PCSX2 on mobile? Is it still the best option for smooth gameplay and good controller support, or has something better replaced it since development stopped?

Would love to hear real experiences before I decide whether to switch.

thanks in advance for any help

I’d probably stick with AetherSX2 if it’s already running your games well, since switching emulators can sometimes create more headaches than it solves. That said, it’s definitely worth trying a couple of alternatives on your phone to see if you get better performance or compatibility, especially with the games you play most.

I’ve also been researching Construction Dumpster Rentals lately, but I’d really like to hear from people who have actually compared these PS2 emulators before deciding whether to switch.

I think AetherSX2 is still a solid option if it’s working well for you, especially since its performance and compatibility are already quite mature. However, NetherSX2 can be worth trying because it builds on AetherSX2 and includes various improvements and fixes. PCSX2 is excellent on PC, but for Android I’d compare AetherSX2 and NetherSX2 first. Personally, I wouldn’t switch just because AetherSX2 stopped receiving updates. If your games are running smoothly with good controller support, there’s not much reason to change unless you’re encountering specific compatibility or performance issues.
