Do Console Exclusives Still Matter?

Hi everyone! In this week's Insider Gaming Wrap Up newsletter, I pose a very simple question: Do console exclusive games still matter?

With where the industry is and where things might be heading, are games releasing for just PlayStation or just Xbox really that important? Or are generational exclusives more impactful to overall sales?

What do you all think?

To me personally, they don't matter. I just buy all the devices that have games that appeal to me. Which is why I have a Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. I would rather all games be available on all systems, so that I would only need one system. But from Pong, to Atari, to Intellivision, to Sega, to Coleco Vision, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and more, it's been like this for many decades.

But for me, if I could just buy one console and play all available games on it, that would be ideal.

If it wasn't for PS exclusives there would be absolutely 0 reason for me and the majority of my friend group to own a console, it'd be all pc. So I'd put at least some sale pushing power behind the bigger ones. Spider Man 2 has sold 11 million+ copies so that's about 1/6th of the ps5 base.

However considering that Playstation have sold ≈62 million console units, even when it only has about 8 total platform exclusives across 4 years (Not VR or remakes/remasters), they're definitely not the be all end all.

They do if you ask me... I do really hope that at least Sony and Nintendo won't stop having exclusives as this is IMO one of the best things about these consoles besides some other features and other good console stuff. But no matter what happens so will I always own a Sony/Nintendo console for sure! (y)

Same here. I will always buy an Xbox and PS for their respective exclusives. I have a Switch, but I just don't have enough time to play those exclusives. I bought it at release, and played like 1 hour on it, TOTAL. My fault, not Nintendo's fault.

Yes they still matter, they are the foremost reason why I bought a PS5. As a PC owner, at the time, I had no need to buy a Xbox as I could play everything on it already.

They need to compete more, exclusives are good for the gaming landscape IMO.

For sure... It's a very good reason to get a console or more consoles to play the exclusives on each platform and have something different to use every time you do play a game. So I really hope that the PS6 etc. isn't the last console with exclusives or AT LEAST console exclusives... But it going back to how it was back in the PS4 days would be very good tbh! (y)
