Fortnite could be getting boosted to a monumental level with 200-player lobbies soon, according to comments made by Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney. In a recent interview, Sweeney suggested that Fortnite and the infrastructure that supports the legendary battle royale game now has the ability to support 200-player lobbies, the likes of which have never been seen before.
Would That Be Too Much?
In an interview with Matthew Ball, Tim Sweeney spoke about all things Epic Games and Fortnite. The most interesting tidbit to come away from the discussion was the suggestion that Fortnite can technically support 200-player lobbies.
Here’s what Sweeney said:
Why is Fortnite: Battle Royale 100 players? Well, because at the time we launched it we couldn’t make 200 players work on a server. Computers in the data center were just too slow.
Talking in the past tense is an indication that while Fortnite couldn’t support 200-player lobbies at launch, it can now. Sweeney went on to talk about the huge leaps the team is making in networking, server management, and player mapping.
Players have been quick to discuss the concept of a 200-player lobby, with some stressing that it would be a nightmarish scenario. Others have put forward a claim that it would only work in a Zero Build environment, as 200 unique players trying to build at the same time would be seriously taxing on the average server.
