Delve Into the Minds of Double Fine With the PsychOdyssey Documentary Series

Psychonauts developer Double Fine has partnered with 2 Player Productions to release an extensive documentary series following the development studio during the production of cult-classic video games Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2.

The documentary, titled Double Fine PsychOdyssey, kicks off at the 10-year anniversary of the original game’s release. PsychOdyssey follows studio founder Tim Schafer and his team as they reminisce over the stress and joy of their past work developing the original unconventional platforming game. With new hires and a lot more experience under their belt, Double Fine members then plan for an ambitious full-scale follow-up to their debut release.

The extensive series features 32 episodes, clocks in at more than 20 hours in total, and has been in production for longer than seven years. A fascinating insight into one of the video game world’s most intriguing studios, it offers the perspective of longstanding talent at Double Fine throughout development. The team encounters challenges, celebrates successes, and navigates their way to the release of Psychonauts 2 together.

The entirety of the Double Fine PsychOdyssey documentary is available to watch for free on the DoubleFineProd YouTube channel. The length of each episode varies dramatically, lasting from 20 minutes to a sizable hour and forty minutes for the finale.

PsychOdyssey isn’t the first documentary following Double Fine’s development cycle. It marks a continuation of the Double Fine Adventure series, which followed the studio through the production of the Broken Age games.

“Ten years after the release of their flagship video game Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions returns to its most celebrated franchise with Psychonauts 2,” the series blurb reads. “Now facing the pressure to produce a worthy sequel, the studio must confront overly ambitious designs, poor morale, technical challenges, and financial woes, all during a turbulent span of time for the world.”

If you’re interested in watching the entire series, you can find the first episode in the PsychOdussey playlist here.
