Death Stranding Has ‘Several Adaptations’ In Production, Kojima Reveals

The legendary Hideo Kojima has revealed that there are several adaptations of Death Stranding in production, one of which is the live-action, feature-length movie that was announced in December 2023. He disclosed that he’s ‘expanding the IP (he) made in all sorts of directions’, while at the same time working on new IP such as Physint and O.D., the latter of which is being produced alongside Jordan Peele.

An Entire Universe

In a recent interview with Variety, Hideo Kojima went into detail about Kojima Productions’ operations and what’s on the cards for the future, both short- and long-term. He referenced having a ‘personal, ideal timeline’ for the many projects he’s working on and suggested he’s set to pair up with the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, and George Miller to piece together some of these ambitious productions.

During his interview, Kojima spoke about what the team is building with the Death Stranding IP:

There are several “Death Stranding” adaptation projects currently underway, but there is a different story I’ve written that’s intended for a movie. But I don’t have the time to direct it, so I won’t.

It reads as though there’s another movie in the works outside of the feature film being created hand-in-hand with A24. That was revealed in December 2023, with Kojima writing:

Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of “game adaptation films” out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game.

The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before.

Many studios are pivoting to lean into the concept of multimedia universes, and Kojima Productions is so well-positioned to do just that. For years, Hideo Kojima has been considered a visionary, and for decades, the games he has created – either at Konami or under his own label – have offered up intense stories that are themselves fully ready to land on the silver screen.

  • Why? Also why isn’t Sony making the project why A24 does Kojima own the IP? On the topic of GDT Microsoft should revive his project Insane. But with these developments how far along is OD? Is Kojima working on a horror title with Junji Ito or not?

  • Why won’t they announce the release date? Kojima confirmed 2025 but said unforeseen circumstances prevented the reveal what circumstances? Can you find out the problem here please.
