Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Censorship Explained

It’s rather common these days for developers to alter a remaster or remake, sometimes significantly, to enhance the experience for modern audiences. Or, so they claim. Some developers take things a step too far and start cutting out content that they feel the community wouldn’t enjoy, but they never ask the community at large. There’s some concern with Capcom’s approach. So, what’s going on with the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster censorship claims?

Is Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Censored?

If you spend any amount of time online, looking at or discussing video games, then you’ll stumble upon loud individuals who call out every upcoming video game for censorship of some sort. Some complaints are rooted in reality, and some aren’t. It’s tough to discern which is which when the argument solely revolves around yelling. But if you pay attention, you can follow the claims for yourself. For instance, there’s the censorship in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, or so many claim.

This censorship involves changes to the dialogue, specifically a boss fight involving Cliff Hudson. In the upcoming remaster, Cliff no longer refers to the player as a “filthy communist.” That dialogue line was scrubbed entirely. It’s rubbing people the wrong way for a number of reasons, primarily because this is a mature-rated game and should retain the dialogue from the original game.

Secondly, Capcom removed the ability to earn Prestige Points by taking erotic photographs in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. In the original game, if you snapped a photo of a survivor’s cleavage, you would receive points that count toward your next level-up. But in the remaster, that system is removed entirely. Capcom said:

When developing Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, we tried our best to create a game that would please returning core fans and appeal to new players alike. As development progressed, we inevitably discovered that we couldn’t include everything from the original game. In the case of the Erotica points system, this was something we discussed at length and decided to remove; not so much as a response to a changing cultural climate, but because we felt there is no need to have a reward points system on this basis. Additionally, when considering Frank’s situation, it is not an appropriate reward for survival and not a skill required of a journalist trying to stay alive for the next 72 hours during a zombie apocalypse. However, players will still have the right to choose their picture subjects freely, and even though they won’t receive points, it is up to them to decide what photos they will take to represent their journey.
