A long-time pro player, analyst, and color commentator for Counter-Strike 2 thinks that Valve should cut the price of the defuse kit in half. The CT economy has always been harder to manage in CS2 because of the more expensive rifles and added cost of said defuse kits.
Would reducing the price of the defuse kits finally get my teammates in Premier to buy one?
The CT Economy is in Shambles
Economy management is a critical part of winning in CS2, and the higher cost that the CT side must pay for a full buy makes that economy hard to manage. Compared to the $2,700 that T-side players spend on an AK-47, CTs have to pay $2,900 for their equivalent in the M4. And then on top of that, CTs also spend $400 on a defuse kit that reduces bomb defusal time from 10 seconds to five.
Recently, Chad “SPUNJ” Burchill posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Valve should make the defuse kit $200. SPUNJ claims this would “help out the CT economy,” and believes that “more available kits raises the chance for retakes to be attempted.”
From the prospective of a fan of Counter-Strike esports, making defuse kits more available would be a positive. So often the CT side chooses to save and not attempt a retake because no one bought a kit. And while saving is the smarter option in that situation, it’s less exciting than watching a retake. By making defuse kits cheaper, more retakes are attempted, which means more exciting Counter-Strike is taking place.
The bigger question though is whether or not CS2 players in general will buy more defuse kits during Competitive or Premier games. Players are also already discussing alternative ways to alleviate the CT economy, like increasing the loss bonus amount.
Is a price reduction of the defuse kit enough to save the CT economy in CS2? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum.
