In March, a studio named Fen Research revealed an all-new and ambitious MMORPG titled ‘Brighter Shores’. At first blush, it spoke to fans of RuneScape, a legendary MMO that’s more than twenty years old and has spent much of that lifetime dominating the genre.
That’s because Brighter Shores is being brought to you by the mind that created RuneScape at the turn of the millennium. It has just been announced that Brighter Shores, Andrew Gower’s free-to-play MMORPG, will enter early access on November 6.
Take Two
RuneScape is one of the most iconic games ever made, and for twenty years, it has held the attention of millions of gamers worldwide. In 2001, Andrew Gower started assembling RuneScape in Java, and shortly after, he went on to co-found Jagex, a company now worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Fen Research was kickstarted by Gower in 2010, but it’s only now that the studio is preparing to deliver its first game – Brighter Shores.
Per a press release announcing the release date for Brighter Shores, a blurb outlined the core concept of Brighter Shores, along with some of the game’s story mechanics:
Finding themselves in the small town of Hopeport, Brighter Shores players will start their new life as a town guard – the first line of defense between the settlement and the fantasy world of Adothria on its doorstep. They will quickly discover, however, that Adothria has far more to offer beyond the town’s walls.
A sprinkling of quirky characters, combined with a healthy dash of humour, makes for an enchanting world – though it’s certainly not without its dangers. As they explore through a variety of environments, adventurers will unravel mysteries, and discover shadowy enemies plotting to unleash great evil upon the world.
It’s a typical MMORPG that will see players become whatever they desire, taking part in activities like hunting, fishing, preparing food, and of course, fighting monsters. In a quote, Gower said:
We’re releasing Brighter Shores with plenty of features for players to sink their teeth into, but this is just the beginning. We’ve planned an extensive roadmap of updates to keep our game fresh and exciting for years to come.
This free-to-play MMORPG will have a paid premium system, but it has been promised that the base game will be substantial enough without the optional purchase. It was said that it has been ‘designed to be fun no matter how much free time players can spend on it.’
Everything about Brighter Shores points to the game already being a roaring success. It has found a spot on more than 100,000 wishlists on Steam, which is where it’ll be released in early access on November 6. If you can’t wait that long, there’s a closed beta taking place on October 22.
