In May, it was revealed that a battle royale-based era would be ending in 2026, with Warzone being removed from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. The paradigm shift might be long overdue, but it effectively means that millions of gamers worldwide will be frozen out of the game, which first launched back in March 2020.
But the removal won’t be an overnight thing. The Warzone shutdown will take place over several months, and below, I’ve outlined the dates you need to know. If you’re wondering when Warzone is shutting down on PS4 and Xbox One, look no further than this guide.
When is Warzone Leaving PS4 and Xbox One?
The grand sunsetting of Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starts on June 4th, which is when new downloads on these platforms will no longer be facilitated by Activision. This means that if you still have Warzone installed, you’re fine, but fresh players won’t be able to access the game.
Beyond that, on June 25th, the digital in-game store on the Warzone platform will be pulled from Xbox One and PS4 platforms, which means you won’t be able to buy any new content. You will still be able to access skins you’ve already bought.
Finally, when the first season of Modern Warfare 4 arrives later this year, which should be around the first or second week of November 2026, Warzone’s servers on PS4 and Xbox One will be shut down.
Why is Warzone Shutting Down on PS4 and Xbox One?
Activision has decided to leave the old generation behind with this year’s Call of Duty release, which we now know will be Modern Warfare 4. This next-generation first-person shooter will likely be too technically demanding and expensive to run on older hardware, which is fast becoming (if not considered so already) widely irrelevant.
As the launch of Modern Warfare 4 will bleed into the Warzone ecosystem, and the multiplayer-based shooter won’t be launching on PS4 and Xbox One, it stands to obvious reason that Warzone simply can’t persist on the older platforms.
This is why, after around November, you will not be able to play Warzone on PS4 or Xbox One.
